Fflam Powys
An ancient people beset...
Rivals contending for a crown...

A Winter's Tale
As the year 1141 dawns in England, the rivalry between the two claimants for the throne bursts into open conflict. Gambling on who will prevail, needing their friendship, Brenin Madog ap Maredudd of Powys takes his men to the ensuring battle and afterwards sends his heir Rhodri off on a simple errand that becomes a journey fraught with danger as he must go against treacherous lords, enemy Cymry, and even his brother to keep hold of the lady who has captured his heart.

Women of Powys
With Rhodri and Alicia brought safely home to Mathrafal, Madog turns his attention to Lord Ifor of Cynllaith, caught up in a plot to betray Powys to Brenin Owain of Gwynedd. Hoping Morgan’s marriage to Ifor’s daughter is the answer, Madog instead finds Owain’s vicious brother Cadwaladr already contending for the young lady, a sinister Frenchman who takes far too much interest in Alicia, and a rival Brenin willing to dare open warfare in his bid for dominance.

Spring Promises
A plea to Brenin Madog for help has drawn his attention to Powys’ southern ally so that Rhodri heads to Deheubarth to support his old friend Brenin Anarawd against a bitter enemy as he strives to recover from the devastating course his own life took. England and its affairs seem far away, but Queen Matilda remains determined to bend every effort to restore her husband Stephen as King, while Empress Maud’s expectations of a crown on her head become embroiled in an ever-deepening tangle of conflict.

Parliament
of Crows
With Rhodri returned from Deheubarth, the opportunity to attend Empress Maud’s crowning seems to promise a strengthened alliance and other possible rewards. Yet even as Bishop Henry seeks to remove all opposition by convening a grand Church council, Queen Matilda and Christian seek the support of London to thwart him and restore Stephen.

Harvest of Folly
In the wake of events at Westminster, desperation to keep Empress Maud’s supporters from losing faith means that Rhodri finds himself tempted with what could bring about his and Madog’s dream of uniting the Cymry. Queen Matilda is more determined than ever to press forward with the advantage she has won, however, as all eyes turn to Bishop Henry's city of Winchester, now at the center of the storm that is about to break.

Cecily Felber weaves a rich medieval tapestry of love, treachery, courage, desperation, and hope in 12th century Wales, whose people are struggling to resist the relentless encroachment of their Norman neighbors, and England, where two royal cousins' contest for the crown will come to be known as 'The Anarchy.'
